Braunovidon

Braunovidon has a narrow registered footprint, available in eight countries — primarily across Central and Eastern Europe. The brand is registered in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Estonia, and contains the active ingredient povidone iodine.

Povidone iodine is classified within the antiseptics and disinfectants category, with bactericidal action against a broad range of microorganisms. The ingredient is used for skin disinfection and antiseptic applications, and registered indications in some markets also extend to vaginitis and certain gastrointestinal uses such as dysentery. The structured indication block further down this page details the specific uses recognised across the markets where Braunovidon is sold.

Outside its Central and Eastern European footprint, the Braunovidon brand is unlikely to be encountered, but povidone iodine as an active ingredient is one of the most widely distributed antiseptics in the world. Travellers familiar with Braunovidon from a German-speaking or Central European pharmacy will generally find an equivalent povidone iodine product in essentially any country, although it will appear under a different brand name and possibly in a different format — solution, ointment, scrub, or mucosal preparation.

Other antiseptic and disinfectant ingredients are also broadly available internationally, though they are not always interchangeable for the same clinical purpose. A local pharmacist is well placed to identify the appropriate povidone iodine product or alternative antiseptic for the intended use. Anyone using Braunovidon for anything beyond minor skin antisepsis, or trying to identify a regional equivalent, should make that decision with input from a healthcare provider familiar with the situation.
